{"id":1234,"date":"2017-11-24T05:32:14","date_gmt":"2017-11-24T10:32:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/antoniokuilan.com\/blog\/?p=1234"},"modified":"2017-11-24T06:46:06","modified_gmt":"2017-11-24T11:46:06","slug":"creationist-skepticism-in-the-science-classroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/antoniokuilan.com\/blog\/creationist-skepticism-in-the-science-classroom\/","title":{"rendered":"Retro Report&#8217;s Evolution under Creationism Attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The New York Times&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/column\/retro-report\">Retro Report <\/a>released a mini documentary concerning the growing skepticism of evolution in the science classroom, chiefly stemming from creationist organizations.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/video\/players\/offsite\/index.html?videoId=100000005559486\" width=\"480\" height=\"321\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The viewer is exposed to first-hand accounts through two former high schoolers, particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zack_Kopplin\">Zack Kopplin<\/a>, who garnered\u00a0 the support of 78 Nobel laureate scientists in his campaign against the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legis.la.gov\/Legis\/ViewDocument.aspx?d=482728\">Louisiana Science Education Act.\u00a0 <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Retro Report&#8217;s doc briefly notes that skepticism against evolution has been <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Creation_and_evolution_in_public_education_in_the_United_States\">a problem throughout early American history<\/a>. At one point, it was even &#8220;illegal&#8221; to teach evolution in many state schools. The mini-doc highlights the infamous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/evolution\/library\/08\/2\/l_082_01.html\">Scopes Trial<\/a>, in which it took less than ten minutes for a Tennessee jury to convict a teacher for teaching evolution. In 1968, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Epperson_v._Arkansas\">Supreme Court knocked down <\/a>these laws, arguing it violated the separation of church and state.<\/p>\n<p>We often hear something like, &#8220;96% of the world&#8217;s scientists believe in evolution,&#8221; but we&#8217;re rarely exposed to the inner thoughts of the 4% creationists-scientists. What is interesting about this mini-doc is that we come face-to-face with a creation-scientist who shares their thoughts about evolution.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/antoniokuilan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/georgiap.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1238\" src=\"http:\/\/antoniokuilan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/georgiap-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"114\" srcset=\"https:\/\/antoniokuilan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/georgiap-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/antoniokuilan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/georgiap-1024x600.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/antoniokuilan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/georgiap.jpg 1684w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/answersingenesis.org\/bios\/georgia-purdom\/\">Dr. Georgia Purdom\u00a0<\/a>Ph.D, is a molecular biologist and biblical creationist.\u00a0 Purdom seems to be brilliant; her work include understanding bone remodeling, and cell\/molecular biology.\u00a0 She also works at the controversial <a href=\"https:\/\/creationmuseum.org\/\">Creation Museum,<\/a> where she often host talks on <a href=\"https:\/\/creationmuseum.org\/events\/presentations\/the-genetics-of-adam-and-eve-georgia-purdom\/\"><em>The Genetics of Adam and Eve<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Purdom notes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/antoniokuilan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/quotemark.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1224\" src=\"http:\/\/antoniokuilan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/quotemark.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"29\" height=\"21\" \/><\/a>I am a scientist and I have looked at the science and I see that it confirms god&#8217;s words. But I would also then like to teach evolution, what the evolutionists believe, and then the problems with that. Because there can only be <strong><em>one<\/em> <\/strong>truth, they both <strong><em>cannot<\/em> <\/strong>be true.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Purdom follows with the perceived problems of evolution:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/antoniokuilan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/quotemark.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1224\" src=\"http:\/\/antoniokuilan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/quotemark.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"31\" height=\"23\" \/><\/a>I mean, if we are teaching our kids they&#8217;re nothing more than the result of undirected random processes over time, that they evolved from some sort of ape-like creature, that they are an animal, how do you expect them to <strong><em>act<\/em><\/strong>?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I nearly fell out of my chair when I heard these anti-evolution rationale.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Purdom is but one among many authoritative creationists who influence local teaching policies. Some creationists are becoming creative in their agenda. One such creation-based organization is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discovery.org\/\">Discovery Institute<\/a>. They are using carefully crafted language to circumvent the Constitution&#8217;s separation of church and state.<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"https:\/\/vivo.brown.edu\/display\/kemiller\">Dr. Kenneth Miller<\/a>, who is also a molecular biologist but anti-creationism, opposes such language. Miller, author of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2zlbDYY\">Only a Theory: Evolution and the Battle for America&#8217;s Soul<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0 argues that this sly language used in state legislatures are designed to sneak anti-scientific ideas into classroom, which becomes &#8220;weapons of disbelief&#8221; that eventually disseminate into other areas like climate science, fertility, and stem cell research &#8211; ultimately harming us all.<\/p>\n<p>My thought is that science concerns itself with the observable. Creationism and science are two very different components. Creationism has no place in public classrooms disguised under <em>sciency<\/em> language. Given that there are more churches than public schools in America, churches are the optimal places for teaching creationism, not public schools.
