{"id":1019,"date":"2016-03-23T00:09:31","date_gmt":"2016-03-23T04:09:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/antoniokuilan.com\/blog\/?p=1019"},"modified":"2016-03-25T10:18:59","modified_gmt":"2016-03-25T14:18:59","slug":"njneedleice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/antoniokuilan.com\/blog\/njneedleice\/","title":{"rendered":"Needle Ice @ Northern New Jersey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When hiking a\u00a0steep 1,700ft+ trail at High Point State Park among the backs of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.nj.us\/dep\/njgs\/geodata\/dgs02-7.htm\">Valley and Ridge<\/a> mountains, I encountered an outcrop of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sierrapotomac.org\/W_Needham\/NeedleIce_070123.htm\">Needle Ice<\/a>\u00a0by accident. Making\u00a0my way up over some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=boulders&amp;biw=1280&amp;bih=629&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=isch&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjuq7eo-9XLAhWEqB4KHT2oDk4Q_AUIBigB\">boulders<\/a>, I stepped on a ledge of soil and a section fell off, revealing what first appeared to be glittering icicles embedded in the soil.<\/p>\n<p>This occurs when the surface air temperature is colder (below 0 \u00b0C) than the temperature of the ground soil (above\u00a0\u00a00 \u00b0C) &#8211; or when the warm soil air meets the cold surface air. Because of these contrasting temps that causes molecular attractions, groundwater is pulled up to the surface via <a href=\"http:\/\/water.usgs.gov\/edu\/capillaryaction.html\">capillary action<\/a> and then freezes into long, needle-like ice structures.<\/p>\n<p>Here are 2 macro close up photos I snapped.
